Varian

I am feeling very content the next morning after “so much sex” with Harlow. I groan as I remember her riding me, determined to find her release. My mate is magnificent.

My mood darkens as I remember how much I need to do today. The traitorous Arcav still has not been found.

Harlow rolls over, stretching, and I pull her closer, wishing I could stay in bed with her all day.

“What do you have planned today?” she asks and then snorts. “Listen to me, we sound positively domestic.”

I do not know what that means, but I smile at her interest.

“Today I continue to try to find the traitor.” My smile turns into a scowl at the thought. “Yesterday I met with Xiax. The Fecax King,” I say as she frowns. “The Fecax are one of our closest allies. They refuse to gather weapons and train an army and instead focus on technological advancement. We provide them with protection in exchange for the first access to any new technologies, particularly those concerning space travel or defense.”

“They have no weapons at all? Good thing they’ve got you guys on their side. So why’d you meet with him?”

“We have a treaty.” I hold back a snarl, still furious at Xiax’s idiocy. “Not only are we to be given any new technology, but we must give formal permission for the Fecax to share that technology with any other races. In exchange, we have protected them from invasion for centuries.”

“Let me guess, they broke the treaty?”

“One of their researchers was mated to a female from Trasla. The Trasla have long been allied with the Grivaths. It seems likely that either the Trasla female was a spy or she convinced her mate to pass on a specific type of technology.”

“What kind of technology?”

“A cloaking system. The shields effectively render space ships invisible to the sensors on other ships. While we have this technology, we were unprepared for it to be used on us. The Grivath used it when they managed to attack our ship.”

Understanding flashes across her face. “So that’s why they were able to board so easily.”

“Yes.”

Harlow sits up, face serious. “Varian? Who represents the humans in negotiations with Earth?”

I shrug. “It is a different human each time. Your people are unable to agree on one official to represent your interests.”

“What happens during these negotiations?”

I smile. “Humans make threats but ultimately agree to do what we would like them to do.”

Harlow raises an eyebrow, “Is that right? Do you know where the HAA headquarters are yet?”

I still, considering. “Do you know something you have not shared, mate?”

She slowly shakes her head but bites her lip, and I shove down a bolt of lust. Occasionally, speaking with Harlow is like negotiating with leaders of other planets. If I do not pay attention, I may regret it.

“What is it that you want?”

“I just think humans need someone who has their best interest at heart, collectively. I want to set up a council to negotiate with you for human rights.”

“Why do you want to do this? Once again, we will be on opposing sides.
